Lets start at the beginning...

W. Edwards Deming

W. Edwards Deming was known as the father of the quality movement. He was one of the greatest influencers over Japan's post-World War ll economy, one of the most dominant in the world. His theories of management own a counterculture approach to achieving quality and retaining people.  At the end of his career, he combined his management theories and his tools for improvement into the System of Profound Knowledge.

The System of Profound Knowledge

Appreciation for a System

The most synchronous system we have the privilege to learn from is the human body. Trillions of cells coordinate in real time with precise rhythm and balance to maintain our function and health. We know that roughly a quarter of the body's energy is solely dedicated to communication via the brain and nervous system, while much of the remaining energy is used for continuous cellular signaling and regulation.

How much energy does your org spend on communicating? Does each function have an understanding of the interdependent relationships to even know how to communicate?

Knowledge about Variation

If you set your thermostat to 72 degrees, but the reading shows 70 in the morning and 73 in the evening, would you assume your heater is broken?

Why are we so accepting of variation in some systems but often have no concept of how to manage similar variation in processes in the workplace?

Theory of Knowledge

Our earliest encounter with humanity’s fundamental process of trial and error occurs before birth, in the womb, where we first learn the relationship between cause and effect. This marks the beginning of our cycle in the theory of knowledge.

How could some intentional focus with some framework impact some of the problems in your workplace?

Psychology

Every day for the last month you've watched your elderly neighbor struggle their way through the snow and ice to get to their car. One morning you decide you're going to get up early and shovel their walk. When you've finished, they come outside and say "Thank you kindly" while handing you 15 dollars.

Though you just became 15 dollars richer than you expected to be, what about that interaction just made you want to never do this again?

There's a difference between taking care of your employees and treating them like they're for sale. If they continually keep score, then you know you've done the latter.
